Age Categories and Subcategories

Age categories define the age brackets used to classify players in tournaments and rankings. Every ranking modality, every tournament category, and every registered player is associated with an age category.

What is an age category?

An age category is a named bracket that specifies eligible birth date ranges. Common examples:

NameTypical meaning
U12Players born in the last 12 years (Under 12)
U14Under 14
U18Under 18
OpenNo age restriction
40+Players aged 40 or older

The exact date ranges for each bracket are configured by your community.

Managing age categories

Age categories are managed at the community level and shared across all tournaments:

  1. Go to Dashboard → Categories → Age Categories.
  2. Click Create age category.
  3. Fill in:
    • Name — the display name (e.g., "U14", "Masters 40+")
    • Minimum birth date — the earliest eligible birth date
    • Maximum birth date — the latest eligible birth date
    • Sport — the sport this category applies to
  4. Save.

Once created, the age category appears as an option when:

  • Creating a tournament category (Valid)
  • Creating a ranking modality
  • Filtering rankings

Subcategories

Subcategories provide an additional classification layer beyond age and gender. They are most commonly used in:

  • Combat sports (JiuJitsu, wrestling) — weight classes
  • Racquet sports — skill levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced)

Managing subcategories

  1. Go to Dashboard → Categories → Subcategories.
  2. Click Create subcategory.
  3. Fill in the name and any applicable filters (sport, modality).
  4. Save.

Subcategories appear as an optional filter when creating tournament categories and ranking modalities.

How age is determined

Players' age eligibility is calculated from their birthday, which must be on file in their player profile. Make sure all registered players have their birthday set correctly, as the system uses it to determine which age categories they qualify for.
