Tournament Categories

A category (internally called a "Valid") is a specific competition division within a tournament. Each category runs independently with its own registrations, bracket, match schedule, and results.

Examples:

  • U12 Boys Singles
  • Open Women Doubles
  • Masters 40+ Mixed
  • U18 Teams

A tournament can have one category or many running simultaneously.

Configuring phases within a category

After creating a category, you can configure its phases (stages). Each phase has settings:

  • Phase type — Groups or Knockout bracket
  • Players that advance — how many move to the next phase
  • Points per win / loss / walkover — for group stage scoring
  • Periods to win — number of sets or games needed to win a match
  • Score to win — points needed per period
  • Tiebreaker rules — how ties in group standings are resolved

Linking a ranking to a category

If you want match results to automatically update a community ranking, you must link it:

  1. Open the category settings or the ranking assignment section.
  2. Click Assign Ranking.
  3. Select the ranking modality this category should count toward.
  4. Save.

From that point, every match result in this category will update the linked ranking automatically.

Managing multiple categories simultaneously

During a tournament, each category is in its own state. You can have:

  • One category in the group stage while another is in quarterfinals
  • Registration still open for one category while matches are live in another
  • Different court assignments per category

The live control panel lets you filter by category to focus on what you need.
